From TranSierra Norte to TransGravel: The Evolution of Adventure Racing in Oaxaca

Over the past 10+ years, we have explored the deep forests in the Sierra Norte of Oaxaca, Mexico. In 2017, we pioneered with TranSierra Norte, the first International Mountain Bike Adventure Race in Oaxaca, Mexico. After developing riding areas such as “Ixtepeji”, “Benito Juarez” and “Etla”, and launching 6 international MTB races, Oaxaca is now one of the most popular Mountain Bike destinations in North America.
This year we decided to launch something different, but still true to our essence and values. Taking place near Oaxaca City, Mexico. TransGravel is a new, One-Of-A-Kind bike race that combines the physical challenge of gravel riding with the vibrant culture of Oaxaca. A celebration of cycling that combines competition with adventure, culture, gastronomy, and camaraderie.
Gravel Enduro Format: What Makes TransGravel Different?
“Gravel is the new enduro!”
Inspired by our world-famous event (TranSierra Norte) the race format will be similar to an Enduro Mountain Bike race. The event will not focus solely on total lap time, but rather on the timed stages per day of racing, Each will last between five to ten minutes. The timed stages will add a dash of strategy and excitement to the event. If there is something we have learned over the last 10+ years, it's the power of community. The race format allows socializing and riding along with cyclists from all over the world in the transfers where the speed won't count, but the good times will.
Race Concept: A Two-Day Gravel Adventure Race in Oaxaca

TransGravel is a true adventure race. Limited support will be provided through the event. Rider’s skills and fitness will be put to the test during the 2 days of riding. There will be 9 timed stages during the duration of the event and a combination of high-elevation climbing and some technical descending on mixed terrain.

In Mexico, opportunities for economic growth in remote areas such as the Sierra Norte can be limited. We work with local communities to ensure that the trails built and events hosted have a positive economic and environmental impact on the surrounding localities. On the other side, racers not only get to push their riding in between the tape, but they also have the chance to ride along and meet riders from all over the world and be part of our growing worldwide community.

The best way to get to Oaxaca City is by air, most international connection flights usually come from Mexico City or Cancun. Some cities offer direct flights to Oaxaca City (Dallas-Fort Worth, Los Angeles, Houston, etc). Look for flights arriving at Aeropuerto Internacional de Oaxaca (OAX).
